Early studies that proved the therapeutic value of riding therapy started in 1875. The same year the French neurologist, Chassaignac, discovered that a horse's actions improved the balance, motion and muscle control of his patients. Their experiences convinced him that riding, improved a patients mood, which was particularly beneficial for paraplegics and patients with other forms of neurological disorders. The big difference between therapy on horseback and using other animals such as, dolphins, dogs, etc. is that we gain extra benefits from sitting on the back of a horse - its movement improves our quality of life.

Individuals with the following disabilities commonly participate and do benefit from equine therapy and activities:
|
Equine therapy is a gentle, yet powerful form of experiential therapy. Because of the comfortable and emotionally accepting environment, patients are better able to identify and express their feelings. This therapy has proven useful in some of the following areas:
Risk Taking - Horses help patients take safe risks in an unknown area that may allow for a more opening up to the therapeutic progress. Compliance - Giving patients responsibility for caring for the horses has been shown to increase attendance and participation, as well as a special connection with the animal. Equal Participation - In equine therapy it is difficult for an individual patient to monopolize the group; something that often happens in traditional group therapy settings.
